Subaru is a Japanese automaker generally focused on affordable vehicles.

While Subaru's prices don't put it in the same rock-bottom category as Kia or Hyundai, its cars are a step-up engineering-wise for a middle class of consumers. The Impreza and Legacy are Subaru's two offerings in the sedan department, both of which start under $20,000. Subaru also makes a turbocharged version of the Impreza, the Impreza WRX.

The company is also well known for its crossovers and station wagons. The Forester wagon shares a platform with the Impreza, while the Outback and Tribeca represent the crossover and SUV segments, respectively.

Drivers might also be interested in the discontinued Subaru Baja, which combined a passenger car body with a pickup-truck bed, similar to an El Camino. While this car is no longer available new, fans of its versatility may be able to find models on the used car market.
