Land Rover is a subsidiary of the Tata Motors-owned Jaguar that focuses primarily
on large four-wheel drive vehicles.
Drivers shopping for a new or used Land Rover will not find any passenger cars in
the lineup - the company only makes large SUVs. Consumers should also be aware that
Range Rover is a brand used by the company to distinguish its more expensive
luxury models from its more affordable Land Rover offerings, although both are pricey
enough to place them firmly in the luxury segment.
Under the "Land" brand, the company offers its two smallest vehicles -
the compact
LR2 (also known as the Freelander) and mid-size
LR4. Drivers shopping the used market will likely encounter the
LR3, but this is simply the older version of the
LR4 rather than a completely separate vehicle.
There's a bit of naming confusion in the "Range" lineup as well. Traditionally,
a "Sport" model means a performance upgrade, but the
Range Rover Sport is actually the more affordable version of the traditional
Range Rover. While both are full-size SUVs, the
Range Rover features upgraded creature comforts and a more powerful
engine to distinguish itself from its "Sport" counterpart.
The company plans to address some concerns about its commitment to fuel economy
with the introduction of the
Range Rover "Evoque" in the near future, which the company claims
is its lightest and most fuel-efficient vehicle of all time.
