Porsche
In addition to being one of the most-recognized luxury brands in the world, the
automaker Porsche is also one of the most successful auto companies in Germany's
history. The company currently owns a controlling stake in Volkswagen, who in turn
owns brands like Audi and Lamborghini. A planned merger between the two companies
will make Porsche one of the biggest car companies in the world.
The company's flagship vehicle is undoubtedly the 911, one of the most successful
cars in history. The current incarnation of the 911 drops the numeric nomenclature
and is instead commonly referred to as the Carrera. This two-door is available as
a coupe, convertible, or both (known as the Targa). It's also available with all-wheel
drive (Porsche adds a 4 after the name to denote this), as well as a supercharged
engine (adding an S after the name).
The company also makes two other two-door models, the entry-level Boxster roadster
and Cayman coupe. Porsche purists hold to the idea that if it's not a two-door,
it's not a Porsche, but the company has had a lot of success with its mid-size Cayenne
luxury SUV, which also includes the company's only hybrid option.
Porsche's most recent unveiling is its first four-door sedan, the Panamera. Like
the 911, it is available with 4 or S options, as well as a premium Turbo engine
designed to rival the performance of the top Carreras.
