Pontiac
Pontiac was the performance division of General Motors for many years before GM
decided to end the brand at the end of 2009. Over the years, Pontiac made many classic
vehicles that earned spots in American culture.
Some of these classic cars include the GTO, Firebird, and Bonneville. Toward the
end of the brand's life, Pontiac began reviving many of these classic models with
mixed results. The Firebird was ended in 2002, and an experimental revival of the
GTO only lasted three years before Pontiac ceased production of the car in 2006.
By the time the brand ended, Pontiac had only 5 models available: the G5, G6, Vibe,
Torrent, and Solstice.
Among the passenger cars, the compact G5 was essentially a rebadged Chevy Cobalt.
However, the mid-size G6 was the best-selling car in Pontiac's lineup until the
brand ended. The Solstice, meanwhile, continued the performance-oriented Pontiac
reputation, but never caught on with a large audience.
The Vibe was a joint effort between GM and Toyota, and is closely related to the
Toyota Matrix hatchback. The Torrent was the only SUV Pontiac made, and GM will
continue to offer the car, albeit as a GMC Terrain.
