Mini
MINI is the division of BMW that manufactures and markets the MINI Cooper line of
cars. It bears no relation to the previous Mini company, largely operating out of
Europe, prompting BMW to capitalize the name in order to distinguish the two.
The current generation of MINI Coopers features three basic options: Hardtop, Convertible,
and Clubman. Within, these are available in the basic Cooper, supercharged Cooper
S, or high-performance "John Cooper Works" option. The "John Cooper Works" upgrades
the MINI engine to 208 horsepower, in addition to offering a more racing-inspired
design.
The Hardtop is the classic MINI Cooper design and the most basic of the models.
The Convertible version of the MINI Cooper, introduced in 2005, is essentially the
Hardtop model with a convertible roof option, rather than its own distinct model.
In 2008, MINI introduced the Clubman, which extends the typical MINI to station
wagon size. It will continue this trend in 2011 with the introduction of the Countryman,
MINI's first crossover SUV and largest car yet.
BMW has also engineered a new electric car for the MINI brand, dubbed the MINI E,
which is currently being loaned out to select drivers in the U.S. market for testing.
