Mercedes Benz

German automaker Mercedes-Benz is one of the most internationally-recognized luxury car manufacturers in the world. Founded in 1881, the storied company boasts many firsts and claims to fame, including winning the world's first automobile race.

Mercedes has a focus on safety, and developed many firsts that are now standard safety features on vehicles in and out of the luxury sector. It was the first to introduce traction control and airbags to the European market, and also pioneered the use of anti-lock brakes and electronic stability programs. In recent years, it has developed technology that detects when a person is beginning to fall asleep at the wheel and alerts the driver accordingly.

Over the years, Mercedes' fleet has diversified greatly. Their flagship S-Class sedan is considered to be among the best luxury cars available, winning the What Car? "Best Luxury Car" award a record seven times. The lineup also includes the C-Class entry-level mid-size sedan and CL line of coupes.

AMG, which began as a separate company, is used to designate the brand's line of high-performance vehicles. AMG versions are available on almost all of Mercedes' cars, including the SLK and SL Roadsters. The company touts that these cars have been engineered to perform on the Autobahn, a stretch of highway in Germany with no speed limit.

Mercedes recently unveiled the SLS AMG supercar, set to debut in the US for less than $200,000. The car serves as the safety car for the 2010 F1 season and features a high-powered V8 engine along with sleek gullwing doors.
