Lincoln
Ford's luxury brand, Lincoln, is one of America's older car companies, founded in
1917 by Henry Leland. Leland and Henry Ford were rivals, and when Ford bought Leland's
company in 1922, he considered it a personal victory.
Since then, Ford developed Lincoln as high-end versions of its cars. As of late,
Lincoln's fleet has undergone a complete redesign. Their new models all begin with
"MK." The four models include the MKX and MKT SUVs and the MKS and MKZ sedans.
The company also has two older models. The Lincoln Navigator SUV is one of the more
popular full-size luxury SUVs on the market and has enjoyed success for the company
since 1998. The Lincoln Town Car is unsurpassed in terms of longevity, serving as
the company's flagship vehicle since 1981.
Upon the Town Car's 30th anniversary, the model will be retired, making way for
the MKS to replace it as the flagship sedan. The cars are similar, as they are both
full-size luxury sedans, although the V8 engine on the Town Car outclasses the MKS'
V6. Lincoln may make more powerful engines available on the MKS to compensate for
the Town Car's absence.
Ford has recently announced plans to expand its Lincoln brand in the wake of the
discontinuation of their Mercury lineup. Analysts expect some Mercury cars to be
repurposed as Lincolns, strengthening the diversity of the fleet.
