Lexus

Lexus is the luxury arm of Japanese automaker Toyota's fleet. Founded in 1989, Lexus has become the best-selling Japanese luxury brand in the world. As of 2005, although it is still owned by Toyota, it has become an independent subsidiary with it's own engineering, design and manufacturing facilities.

SUVs have been an especially big seller for Lexus, and the company was the first to introduce a luxury crossover vehicle with its RX line. The RX was designed for those who wanted the extra-room provided by an SUV, but didn't need off-roading capability.

The company has also been successful with its sedans. It has four models at various price points and sizes: the entry-level compact IS, mid-size ES and GS, and full-size LS. All of these are also available as hybrids, along with the RX. For those who like smaller cars, the IS is available as a coupe/convertible, along with the high-powered SC 430.

Lexus recently introduced its high-performance "F" brand, named after Fuji Speedway in Japan. The F designation indicates a bigger engine, such as the 5.0-liter V8 on the IS F that replaces the 2.5-liter V6 on the IS 250. The company plans to offer a GS F in the next model year.

The last aspect of the new F series is the LFA, a $375,000 supercar designed to compete with the top European brands. The LFA boasts a 4.8-liter V10 along with an impressive 0-60 in 3.6 seconds and will begin production in December.
