Hyundai
South Korea-based Hyundai is the fastest growing automaker in the world, and currently
the fourth-largest car company in existence. In 1998, it purchased Kia, which was
at the time South Korea's second largest car company.
Hyundai's flagship vehicle is the Sonata, which the company describes as a four-door
coupe, due to its sleek design. In actuality, the car is a mid-size sedan with a
2.4-liter V4 engine. Hyundai plans to introduce a hybrid option for the Sonata by
the end of the year.
Unlike some car companies that offer only one compact option, Hyundai has two compact
models, the Accent and Elantra. Both of these models are marketed for their lightweight
design that maximizes interior space. The Accent is also available as a 3-door hatchback,
and the slightly bigger Elantra comes as a 5-door hatchback.
Hyundai's crossover/SUV offerings, in order of size, are the Tucson, Santa Fe, and
Veracruz with the full-size Veracruz geared more towards the luxury market.
The company recently debuted the luxurious Hyundai Equus to the American market.
The Equus sedan boasts 385 horsepower and a slew of luxury features, including an
owner's manual pre-loaded on an iPad that will allow owners to schedule maintenance.
Some speculate that the Veracruz, Genesis, Azera and Equus will eventually be spun
off into Hyundai's luxury brand.
