Bentley
Long recognized as one of the world's top high-end brands, Bentley's history traces
back to its founder, W.O. Bentley, who founded the company in 1919. The company
owed its initial success and reputation in the 24 Hours of Le Mans race, which not
only test's car's top speed, but endurance. Bentley dominated the early races, but
the Great Depression brought Barnato financial ruin. The company was bought by its
rival, Rolls-Royce, who owned it for many years.
In a highly-publicized deal, Volkswagen outbid BMW and purchased the company in
1998. Volkswagen was committed to returning the brand to its roots. This was capped
off by two Bentley Speed 8's taking first and second at Le Mans in 2003, the company's
first victory in the race since 1927.
Because of their high price, Bentley does not sell many cars, only breaking the
10,000 car mark for the first time in 2007. Demand for the company's Continental
GT coupe has been high, bringing the company record profits.
The company also manufactures a Continental Flying Spur, which is its four-door
sedan offering.
Bentley recently debuted their new flagship, the Mulsanne, in 2010. The Mulsanne
is named after a stretch of highway in the Le Mans race where the cars reach their
top speeds.
