Volvo's Concept You highlights the future of automotive possibilities in Frankfurt 09/22/2011
The Frankfurt Motor Show is in full swing and Volvo, like many other car companies, is unveiling a concept car that reveals the direction in which they are heading. The Concept You is chock-full of technology and hints that the Swedish automaker could be making a move to join the ranks of luxury car companies.
"Here, we use a number of touch-screens to replace buttons and controls in order to make the driver totally connected, totally in control," said designer Peter Horbury. "The technology also helps us to create a refreshingly uncluttered interior."
Volvo is also a major player in the development of safety technology, having made major advancements in the realm of radar-detection systems, and the Concept You aims to contribute to safe driving by simplifying the dashboard technology to keep drivers from getting distracted. The screens - which includes a driver information monitor, touch screens in the center console, between the rear seats and in the steering wheel, and a head-up display - are only activated when they 'sense' the driver is looking at them. Certain controls are also locked for the driver, while remaining available for passengers to use when the car is in motion.
Technology is not the only focal point of the new car. The exterior design of the Concept You is inspired by Danish design firm Georg Jensen, and breaks the mold of Volvo's iconic boxy design. Inside the vehicle, there is a hand-tufted area rug, and the seats, door inserts and headliner are covered in luxurious leather and suede. The seats themselves are mounted on a center bar and float above the floor, so no more worrying about losing things under the seats.
