Volvo recalls more than 100,000 cars due to air bag system defect 11/11/2010
Volvo has recalled more than 100,000 cars in 80 countries due to concerns over malfunctioning air bag systems and hoses that aid power steering, according to Bloomberg.

The Swedish automaker has asked owners of the 100,100 cars potentially affected by the air bag problem to bring their vehicles to dealerships or repair shops. The problem in the air bag system is caused by a faulty wiring connect that creates a very small risk that the system would fail to deploy properly. The company estimates that the defect can be checked and fixed within approximately half an hour.

A separate recall of 13,500 cars in China relates to a hose leak that impedes proper functioning of the power steering system.

Models with the potentially faulty air bag system wiring are the S80, the S80L, the S60, the V70, the XC70 and the XC60.

In the United States, 9,753 vehicles are subject to the recall. Sweden is the market with the highest number of recalled cars, with 19,273 vehicles affected.

"While 100,000 cars is pretty big for Volvo, this is a fairly small recall from the perspective of the international auto industry," Volvo spokesman Per-Ake Froberg told the news source.
