Volvo XC70 vs Toyota Venza 11/29/2010
Automakers have largely abandoned station wagons in favor of crossovers, with even Volvo, a noted station wagon maker, making the switch with its new XC70. Yet the new model still shares some properties with wagons, much like the Toyota Venza. One of the models is a better buy for wagon lovers, however.
At $32,000, the Volvo retails for nearly $4,000 more than the Venza's $28,300 price tag. In terms of performance, the Venza has the slight edge, with a 10 lb-ft of torque and 28 horsepower edge over the XC70. The Venza also comes with an option for all-wheel drive while the XC70 is front-wheel drive only, although Toyota buyers will pay an extra $1,500 for this feature.
The Volvo comes with a number of additional features that drivers may prefer over the Venza. It has more cargo space and a number of interior options standard that are either not available or cost extra on the Venza. The Volvo is comprehensive when it comes to safety, with features like a blind-spot warning system. It also features a much lengthier warranty program than Toyota does, with 3 more years of basic and roadside assistance coverage.
Finally, drivers who want the most performance can opt for the turbocharged XC70, which will easily surpass the Venza's output - for a $6,000 price tag. Although that package might not be the most enticing, the base Volvo has enough advantages over the Venza to make it a better value.
