Volvo C30 vs Volkswagen GTI 03/29/2011
With gas prices spiking, many drivers are opting for smaller and more fuel efficient hatchbacks over bulky SUVs. There are a wide range of options on the market, but many are barebones models that don't offer too many features.
The Volvo C30 and Volkswagen GTI both buck that trend, as they are more representative of the "hot hatch" class than a car that puts a focus on efficiency and low prices. That makes them a bit more expensive - the C30 is $24,600 and the GTI is $23,695 - but their increased power is worth it to some drivers.
For example, the C30's five-cylinder engine allows it to achieve 227 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque. The GTI also cracks 200 on both fronts, with 200 hp even and 207 lb-ft. Both cars still get good fuel efficiency, as the C30 is rated at 21/29 mpgs while the GTI boasts 21/31.
The interiors are a bit nicer as well compared to cars in the $15,000 range. Both vehicles come with an iPod hookup and Bluetooth connectivity, but the GTI comes with heated seats and satellite radio to boot. Although they cost extra, the C30 does have some options like dual climate control and a premium stereo system that can't be added to the GTI.
We ultimately give the slight edge to the GTI, as it's considerably cheaper but doesn't really lose out too much in terms of power.
