Volkswagen recalls over 12,000 Routans 03/14/2011
Americans who drive a 2010 Volkswagen Routan should be aware that the German car company has issued a recall for 12,612 units due to a problem with an electrical system ignition switch, which may cause the engine to stop working, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
"Some vehicles may experience inadvertent ignition key displacement from the run to accessory position while driving, causing the engine to shut off," the NHTSA said in a statement. "An engine shutting off suddenly while driving could increase the risk of a crash."
Volkswagen claimed that drivers can still operate the 2010 Routan, but that they should take off any extra keys or key chains, which could reduce the chance of the problem occurring. The car company also stated that individuals should double check that the key is in the accurate position when it is in the ignition.
The recall will most likely take place sometime next month and consumers can bring their vehicle to their local dealer, who will replace the defective WIN module for free, according to the NHTSA report.
Additionally, earlier this week, both Toyota and General Motors recalled a number of their vehicles because of tire and mechanical problems.
