The diesel hybrid will be the first of its kind 05/20/2011
As more of us are looking for vehicles with a high fuel economy, car companies are attempting to roll out the models that they believe will bring consumers into the showroom. Since Toyota debuted the Prius worldwide in 2001, a lot more people have been looking for more fuel-efficient vehicles, setting a trend in the automotive industry.
Mercedes is the latest to jump on the hybrid bandwagon, as the luxury automaker is working on an E-Class diesel hybrid, according to Motor Trend Magazine. The car is expected to go into production next year. However, analysts note that when the fuel-efficient vehicle was presented during the Geneva Auto Show in 2010, executives suggested that it would be ready by this year. The E300 BlueTEC Hybrid is much like a typical hybrid vehicle, as it allows drivers to switch to complete electric driving and has a stop/start function.
The news provider reports that various delays on auto parts such as the brand new 302-hp direct-inject 3.5-liter V6 have caused the luxury manufacturer to hold back on production. Still, it appears as Mercedes is moving forward despite these setbacks that have left some questioning whether or not this car would see the light of day.
As hybrid vehicles become more mainstream, we're not surprised that Mercedes is the first automaker to offer a hybrid that takes diesel fuel with this new E-Class. While it remains a mystery as to when the vehicle will truly be released, we'll bet that those who are a fan of luxury sedans will be interested to see the finished product.
