Subaru Tribeca vs Toyota 4Runner 03/21/2011
Many crossover SUVs come with an inline-four engine, which is a little bit light on power considering all the extra weight that these vehicles carry. Drivers considering upgrading to a six-cylinder will likely be looking in the $30,000 range, but the extra power can make a world of difference.
Two popular models that merit consideration are the Subaru Tribeca and Toyota 4Runner. Subaru prices the Tribeca at $30,495, while Toyota's 4Runner is slightly cheaper at $29,705. Both models come with a 5 year/60,000 mile warranty.
What's nice about these two vehicles is that they both feature shiftable automatics in the base models, so no messing with manual transmissions. Both are also equipped with the aforementioned six-cylinder engines, although the Toyota's V6 is more powerful than Subaru's flat-six. The 4Runner produces 270 horsepower and 278 lb-ft of torque, while the Tribeca gets 256 hp and 247 lb-ft. Toyota also beats Subaru in fuel economy, 17/23 mpgs to 16/21.
We like the Subaru's interior better, as it comes with dual-climate control and powered, heated seats standard. Still, the Toyota has parking assistance and is well-equipped for the price. Ultimately, we think the 4Runner is the better vehicle overall thanks to the extra power and fuel efficiency for a lower price.
