Subaru Impreza WRX STI vs Mercedes C300 04/01/2011
The Subaru Impreza WRX STI is a good example of a car that's tuned almost exclusively for performance. Drivers who have a need for speed will find this car to be right up their alley. But is it worth the price tag? We compared the Impreza with a similarly-priced luxury model, the Mercedes C300, to see which one offered drivers more bang for their buck.
These vehicles both retail for $34,000, so price isn't really too much of a factor here. The Impreza does offer a better warranty at 5 years/60,000 miles compared to the Mercedes at 4 years/50,000.
Unsurprisingly, the Impreza wins in the performance department. This Subaru's turbocharged four-cylinder is able to take down the Mercedes' V6. Subaru buyers can expect 305 horsepower and 290 lb-ft of torque, while Mercedes drivers will have to make due with 228 hp and 221 lb-ft.
One would assume that much of the Mercedes' value would come from its plush interior, but that's not really the case. The C300 features power seats standard, but the Impreza comes with heated seats and an iPod hookup.
Altogether, the Mercedes really holds almost no advantages over the Subaru - except perhaps brand prestige.
