Subaru Impreza Hatchback vs Toyota Matrix 02/15/2011
Hatchbacks have become increasingly popular as drivers begin to prioritize affordability and fuel economy over large engines. We recently compared two of the top models in the segment, the Subaru Impreza Hatchback and Toyota Matrix, to see which was the better value.

The $17,995 Impreza Hatchback starts slightly cheaper than the $18,545 Matrix. Hatchbacks are typically inexpensive to maintain, and both cars are buoyed by 6 year/70,000 mile powertrain warranties for added protection.

Subaru places an emphasis on performance, with the vehicle's flat-four engine producing 170 horsepower and 170 lb-ft of torque. That easily beats the Matrix's 132 hp and 128 lb-ft of torque. However, the Impreza pays for it in fuel economy, as it posts 20 city/27 highway EPA-rated mpgs compared to Toyota's superior 26/32. The monthly fuel costs ultimately mean that the Matrix will become the cheaper vehicle over time.

Neither car offers much in the way of interior features, but the Impreza does come with a standard anti-theft system. It also offers an optional iPod hookup, while Toyota buyers will have to invest in a higher trim level to get that feature.

In the end we give the nod to the Impreza, as it offers excellent performance for the price.
