Scion xD and Mazda2 are both attractive options for young drivers 11/18/2010
Young drivers looking to make their first vehicle purchase will likely be looking at an affordable vehicle with versatility, a factor that explains why compact hatchbacks have been increasingly popular over the years. Two of the cheapest models are the Scion xD and Mazda2, but one of the cars gives a bit more bang for buyer's bucks.
Both models come with inline-four engines, but the Scion delivers more pop with a 1.8-liter displacement, 128 horsepower and 125 lb-ft of torque. The Mazda2 gets exactly 100 horsepower and 98 lb-ft of torque. Yet the smaller engine on the Mazda2 means better fuel economy, getting 2 mpg more than the xD in both city and highway ratings. The Mazda2 also has a tighter turning radius, meaning it might be slightly easier to park for city drivers.
In terms of styling and features, the Mazda2 offers drivers slightly increased headroom, legroom and storage space with an overall roomier interior. The xD comes with a more powerful Pioneer six-speaker audio system with USB integration while the Mazda2 features a basic 4-speaker setup. The xD also wins the styling battle with an attractive exterior and a standard rear spoiler.
At $15,045, the xD runs nearly $900 more than the Mazda2 at $14,180, but drivers get the better performance, stereo system and styling. The Mazda2 is a good choice for a no-frills alternative, but the xD's extra features at a reasonable price make it the overall winner.
