Scion xB vs Hyundai Elantra Touring 01/26/2011
Once a popular model, the wagon has largely gone the way of the dodo, in favor of more popular hatchbacks and crossovers. Still, there are a number of vehicles available that approximate the classic style in their own way.
The Scion xB interprets "in their own way" as loosely as possible, as this box-like design is sure to attract attention. The Hyundai Elantra Touring GLS, meanwhile, offers drivers a more traditional wagon experience. These vehicles are just $5 apart, with both selling for approximately $16,000. So which is the better buy?
In terms of performance, the xB jumps out to an early lead thanks to its powerful 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine. The xB produces 158 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque, easily besting the Hyundai, which can't top 140 in either category.
On the inside, the xB demonstrates why it has been such a hit with the younger generation of car buyers, as it comes standard with an iPod hookup and premium sound system. The Elantra Touring features an iPod attachment as well, but lacks the nice speakers.
The only thing that the Elantra Touring GLS truly has going for it is it's 10 year, 100,000 mile warranty. But in the end, that's not enough to make it a better buy than the Scion xB.
