Obama has been heavily pushing for the use of electric cars 05/20/2011
We understand that electric cars could be a way to stave off that nuisance known as global warming, and of course avoiding the gas station is always a plus in today's day and age, but now there's a new reason to go green. The Obama administration is looking to promote electric cars to their full potential, hoping to give more consumers the edge to purchase one.

The Associated Press is reporting that Ray LaHood, the U.S. Transportation Secretary, announced that the Obama administration wants to give tax rebates to consumers of hybrid vehicles as an extra incentive.

Although there is already a tax rebate of $7,500, the news provider reports that the administration wants to make it possible to receive it once they drive the car off the lot. LaHood met with executives from Nissan discussing the plan for consumers of the company's Leaf model.

However, company executives were quick to point out that it has still not deterred people from buying the Leaf, as many consumers are simply concerned with saving money at the gas station.

"I believe the model they're using here is something I hadn't even thought about," LaHood told the news provider. "They base the idea not just on $4.00 a gallon gas. They do want a cleaner environment, to clean the air up."

Nissan executives may have a point. According to eGMCarTech, the company expects to sell more than 10,000 Leaf units by the end of the year, a clear indication that despite waiting for a tax rebate, customers are still coming in droves to drive one.
