Now the plant the Volt is built in will have solar power 05/16/2011
General Motors (GM) has been heavily promoting its Chevy Volt model, as more people are looking for fuel-efficient options. Now, the automaker announced that it will be adding solar power to the Volt's plant in Michigan, promoting environmentally friendly practices.
Forbes reports that the project will provide enough electricity to charge 54,750 Volts and the solar array will cover 264,000 feet. Executives are happy with the new development, as it promotes energy efficiency.
"This array will significantly decrease energy consumption by combining solar power with ongoing efficiency tactics such as lighting and equipment upgrades and automating equipment shut-down," Bob Ferguson, vice president of GM Public Policy, told the news provider.
The Detroit Free Press reports that this will lower the company's energy bills by about $15,000 a year, which could make a significant impact on GM's overall expenses. The 516-kilowatt system will be owned and run by DTE Energy, which is currently operating similar systems at Monroe County Community College and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan.
