New 2012 Sorento gets boost to gas mileage, performance 05/17/2011
Gas mileage and performance are typically two aspects of a vehicle that are at odds with each other. There are exceptions, but in general, increasing the performance of the vehicle through bigger engines means that you'll be sacrificing fuel economy. That's why all the most fuel-efficient vehicles use small four-cylinders while luxury cars outfitted with V6s and V8s can't compete in terms of mileage.
So Kia has reason to celebrate today, as they've announced a new engine for their 2012 Sorento that is expected to boost both performance and fuel economy. The new 2.4-liter direct-injection four-cylinder engine will be available on all 2012 Sorento models, which have already reached dealerships.
Kia has not revealed exact details, but Autoblog reports that horsepower has been increased from 175 to 200 thanks to the new engine. Kia claims an uptick in gas mileage as well, although the company has yet to release specific figures. The 2011 Sorento already got solid gas mileage for a crossover, at 21/29 miles per gallon.
Under the hood wasn't the only area that received attention. On the interior, the new Sorento sports a hands-free "infotainment" system, which Hyundai and Kia call UVO. The automakers are bringing the upgrade to many of their vehicles, so its no surprise that the family-friendly Sorento is one of the first to get the treatment.
