Mitsubishi Lancer vs Mazda3 03/30/2011
Drivers in the market for a compact sedan can likely snag one for around $15,000, but they might have trouble deciding between the various models available at this price point. We took two of the more popular models, the Mitsubishi Lancer and Mazda3, and stacked them side-by-side to see which was the better value.

The Mazda3 is a bit more expensive off the bat, as it's priced at $15,800 while the Lancer comes in at $15,195. The Lancer's warranty is outstanding at 10 years/100,000 miles, while the pledge backing the Mazda is merely average at 5 years/60,000.

These two vehicles are very evenly matched under the hood - in fact they both produce exactly 148 horsepower. The Mazda3 gets 1 more mile per gallon in the city, which is unlikely to really be noticed over the life of the vehicle. It also surrenders 11 lb-ft of torque to the Lancer - again something that won't really be noticed.

The interiors of both vehicles are sparse, as the manufacturers are trying to keep costs down at this price point. According to Edmunds.com, the Lancer is a bit roomier on the inside when it comes down to the actual measurements, if only ever so slightly.

It's these small edges and cheaper price that ultimately gives the victory here to the Mitsubishi Lancer, although both are excellent vehicles.
