Mini Cooper Clubman vs Volkswagen Golf GTI 01/14/2011
When most drivers are considering hatchbacks, they're looking at vehicles in the $10,000-$20,000 range that won't break the bank. While they'll have no shortage of options to choose from, there are a few slightly more expensive hatchbacks that give drivers a near-luxury experience.
The Mini Cooper brand, as part of BMW, is one of the more recognizable hatchbacks to offer luxury features. But BMW's German rival, Volkswagen, also offers a high-end hatchback in the form of the Volkswagen GTI.
Starting at $21,100, the Mini Cooper Clubman is a roomier version of the base Mini model, while the $23,695 GTI is an upgraded version of Volkswagen's Golf hatchback. BMW offers drivers a 4 year/50,000 mile warranty on both basic parts and the powertrain. Volkswagen's warranty is slightly less for basic parts at 3 years/36,000 miles, but extended for the powertrain, with 5 years/60,000 miles of coverage.
In terms of performance, both models sport four-cylinders, but the GTI's is turbocharged, which justifies its higher price tag. Drivers will have to weigh if the 80 additional horsepower and 90 extra lb-ft of torque is enough to justify the $2,500 gap in price.
For our money, the GTI's performance boost, along with some additional features like an iPod hookup, Bluetooth and heated seats, make it the better choice for those seeking a near-luxury hatchback.
