Mazda is currently developing an ignition system that will replace spark plugs with lasers. 06/29/2011
Mazda plans to bring its fuel economy up by 30 percent in the next four years. The automaker is working on a new six-speed automatic transmission, SKY-Drive, that will reduce gas usage and make drivers feel as though they are operating a dual-clutch manual.

Spark plugs have been the standard for ignition and combustion in every gasoline car since 1860, but Mazda is currently testing a new system that could replace tradition with technology, according to Car Advice. The Japanese automaker is currently developing a laser ignition system, that will help the 16X Renesis engine run cleaner and more efficiently in new cars.

"Improving fuel efficiency and reducing CO2 emissions is not just a goal at Mazda, it's part of our business plan; we will make vehicles that are safer for our environment," said Jim O'Sullivan, the president and CEO of Mazda's North American Operations.

One of the advantages of using lasers in place of spark plugs is that the hole on the combustion chamber will be smaller. This will allow for better combustion control that could lead to less fuel use, which AutoGuide.com claims has been an issue for this engine.
