Lancer vs Impreza 12/06/2010
The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution and Subaru Impreza WRX STI are both darlings of the tuning community, as both models are very receptive to modifications and come at a reduced price compared to many luxury vehicles with similar specs.
Beyond their similar reputation, the two cars share a number of features. Both are priced exactly the same at $33,995. Both feature turbocharged four-cylinder engines and the exact same 17/23 mpg fuel economy. Both also come with 5 year/60,000 mile powertrain warranties. Yet one is a slightly better buy.
In terms of horsepower, the Impreza WRX STI is tuned for horsepower, putting out 305 compared to the Evo's 291. Yet the Evo has better torque - 300 compared to 290. Many might look at those numbers and assume that Impreza is the better car, as it has 14 more horsepower but only ten less torque. That might be true if horsepower and torque were created equal. But they're really not.
Torque is the more practical measurement, as it affects how quickly a car accelerates. Horsepower is more a measurement of the top power a car is capable of. Since few drivers are getting up to their car's top speed, torque is slightly more important.
The Lancer Evolution also features a 5 year, unlimited mileage roadside assistance plan while Subaru's is capped at 3 years/36,000 miles. In a tight race, it's enough to give the edge to the Mitsubishi.
