Lamborghini Sesto Elemento to go into production 09/19/2011
Lamborghini announced during opening day of the 2011 Frankfurt International Motor Show that the Sesto Elemento concept car has officially been approved for production. The new car made its first appearance last year at the Paris Auto Show, as a concept vehicle to demonstrate the Italian automaker's prediction for the future of luxury sports cars.
"The excellent feedback and the numerous requests we've had from our customers have really convinced us to embark on the challenge of producing a vehicle with unique characteristics," said Stephan Winkelmann, the president and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini.
The Sesto Elemento's main draw is its weight, which is just under 1,000 kilograms (roughly 2,204 pounds). This makes it the lightest super sports car to be produced since the Lamborghini Countach Evoluzione prototype in 1986. It will have a powerful V10 engine that is capable of generating up to 570 horsepower, and since it is so light, the weight-to-power ratio ensures unequaled performance. For example, the Sesto can rocket from zero to 60 miles per hour in less than 2.5 seconds.
The impressive supercar, which is made mostly of carbon-fiber materials, will not be cruising down the highway any time soon, as Lamborghini reminded their audience that the Sesto is intended for a life on the race track. However, race drivers can celebrate because the car will be available as early as the beginning of 2013.
