Jeep Compass vs Mitsubishi Outlander Sport 02/14/2011
Sometimes families have no choice but to purchase an SUV, as they need the extra room to fit kids and gear. Unfortunately, SUVs are typically more expensive than sedans and hatchbacks. We recently looked at some more affordable options in the SUV segment that will give families the space they need without breaking the bank.
The Mistubishi Outlander Sport and Jeep Compass are two of the more affordable utility vehicles on the market. The Outlander starts at $18,495, while the Compass is slightly less expensive at $19,295. Both vehicles come with 100,000-mile powertain warranties, but the Compass' expires after 5 years while the Outlander's lasts for 10.
Neither vehicle boasts a lot of power, as both feature an inline-four engine. Mitsubishi gives drivers the edge in torque, with 145 lb-ft compared to the Jeep's 141. But the Compass is slightly better in horsepower, with 158 hp outpacing the Outlander's 148. It's worth noting that the Outlander gets 1 mpg better in the city and 2 on the highway.
Both SUVs are a bit sparse on the interior, but the Outlander does feature Bluetooth connectivity. That, combined with a cheaper price and better warranty, makes it the better value in our book.
