Hyundai is looking to increase its green offerings 05/31/2011
As more automakers are looking to offer environmentally friendly vehicles that will attract customers during a time of high gas prices, Hyundai is stepping into the ring with a plan for a hybrid model.
Reuters reports that officials at Hyundai Motor Company announced that it will be releasing a plug-in hybrid in 2013. This will be a car that will go toe-to-toe with the Prius, Toyota's highly-popular hybrid model.
"We plan to launch a plug-in hybrid model which is in the same segment as Prius in 2013," the official said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media, according to the news source.
Left Lane News reports that the South Korean automaker has been experiencing a high demand for the Sonata Hybrid, which went on sale in the U.S. this past January. As a result of the attention the car has received, executives are looking into other models in order to attract consumers. The news provider estimates that the car would be based on the Sonata Hybrid but feature the technology of the Chevrolet Volt.
