Hyundai Genesis vs Toyota Avalon 04/15/2011
The Hyundai Genesis is the South Korean automaker's attempt at an entry-level luxury vehicle. While the company was once known for making affordable models that retailed for less than $20,000, recent changes have seen Hyundai getting into the luxury market. But can it compete against similar sedans at the price point?
We tested the Genesis against one of Toyota's high end offerings, the Avalon. These two cars are close in price, with the Genesis retailing for $33,000 and the Avalon just a bit cheaper at $32,595. Hyundai has the better powertrain warranty at 10 years/100,000 miles, while Toyota offers 5 years/60,000.
The Avalon is better when it comes to fuel efficiently, as its 20/29 mpgs will save drivers money compared to the Hyundai's 18/27. However, drivers sacrifice a bit of power for this advantage. The Avalon only produces 248 lb-ft of torque and 268 horsepower, while the Hyundai receives 264 lb-ft and 290 hp.
On the interior, it's really no contest. Not only does the Genesis come with keyless ignition and heated seats standard, but it also offers a range of add-ons that aren't available on the Avalon, like a hard drive for music and parking assistance.
We give this one to the Genesis, for its better interior, increased power and longer warranty.
