Hyundai Genesis Coupe vs Chevrolet Camaro 04/15/2011
Hyundai seems to have developed a vehicle for nearly every market segment, and the Genesis Coupe nicely fills the spot of "affordable performance coupe." But how does it stack up against one of the segment's most famous examples, the Chevrolet Camaro?
These two cars are quite close in prices, with Chevrolet pricing the Camaro at $22,680 and Hyundai offering the Genesis Coupe for $22,250. As usual, Hyundai has the best warranty with 10 years/100,000 miles of coverage, compared to Chevy's 5 years/100,000 miles.
However, what most drivers will be looking for here is performance, and the Camaro delivers in spades. Its 3.6-liter V6 engine produces 312 horsepower and 278 lb-ft of torque. The base model of the Genesis Coupe only gets 210 horsepower and 223 lb-ft of torque. It should be noted that the Genesis Coupe can be equipped with a V6 that will put its numbers very close to the Camaro. However, this upgrade sends the price up to nearly $27,000.
We also prefer the interior on the Camaro. The vehicle comes with power seats and the reliable OnStar system standard. The Genesis Coupe does have Bluetooth connectivity and an iPod jack, but most of its features only come on more expensive trim levels.
With significant added investment, it's possible to build a Genesis Coupe that rivals or even beats the Camaro - but that kind of defeats the point. For the money, the Camaro is the better vehicle.
