Chrysler 300 SRT-8 vs BMW 5 Series 04/14/2011
Normally, the BMW 5 Series and Chrysler 300 wouldn't even really be in the same ballpark, but drivers who spend the extra cash on the 300 can equip it with an SRT-8 performance package that brings its price very close to BMW's famous model. So which is the better buy?
The 300 SRT-8 is priced at $44,865, while BMW's 528i is slightly more expensive at $45,050. Chrysler holds the edge when it comes to warranty, as the 300 features a 5 year/100,000 mile powertrain pledge that beats BMW's 4 years/50,000 miles.
Under the hood, the 300 SRT-8 is the clear winner, producing 425 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque to the 528i's 240 hp and 230 lb-ft. BMW does win in fuel efficiency, however, with the vehicle's 22/32 mpgs trouncing the Chrysler's 13/19 rating. It's worth noting that BMW does offer a V8 on its 550i, which produces 400 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque. The problem is that this car costs $60,000.
One might say that the big gulf in price is because the BMW is a luxury model while the Chrysler is tuned for performance, but the 300 really matches the BMW on most interior features as well. In fact, the only things BMW can really brag about are the BMW Assist system, standard nav and Bluetooth. In fact, the 300 SRT-8 even has a few features that BMW doesn't, like keyless igntion and heated seats.
We give the win to the 300 SRT-8, as it offers greatly increased power for a cheaper price.
