Best Swedish cars 04/25/2011
If you asked the average person what their favorite Swedish car was, they'd likely look at you funny. In fact, it wouldn't be very surprising if people didn't even know that Swedish car companies existed. Yet both Volvo and Saab call Scandinavia home, and they've each produced some memorable models over the years. So here's our top picks if you're looking to "buy Swedish."

Saab 9-3

Saab is in a bit of a rebuilding phase right now, as the company was recently sold off by its previous owner, General Motors, to the Dutch company Spyker. As the automaker retools its lineup, one car we hope they don't change is the Saab 9-3. This vehicle may not get as much praise or sales as stalwarts like the Honda Civic or Toyota Camry, but it's really everything that a midsize sedan should be - safe, dependable and fun to drive.

Volvo V50

The station wagon has become a bit of a lost art, quickly replaced by the crossover SUV. Still, fans of wagons should likely by from Volvo, as they've been making them for years and the company is known for its safety. The V50 can still get things done on the highway, as it features 227 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque - not bad for a wagon.

Volvo C70

While safe and dependable wagons and sedans may be what Volvo is known for, the company has attempted to shed that image to some extent by offering more aggressive vehicles. The Volvo C70 is a prime example of that. Bucking the traditional Swedish trends of practicality and subtlety, the C70 is a convertible coupe designed to compete with the heavyweights of the luxury class.
