BMW is trying to keep drivers safe with new system 05/18/2011
Many of us try to make U-turns as quick as possible, but there is always the chance that other vehicles are going too fast and could potentially cause an accident. BMW is looking to keep its drivers as safe as possible through a new technology made specifically for when cars are making left hand turns.

Motor Trend Magazine reports that the German automaker recently developed a "left turn assistant," which uses navigation, camera, laser and vehicle-to-vehicle technology to alert a driver that they're putting themselves at risk while making a left hand turn.

The system will detect any vehicle that is within 100 meters of oncoming traffic, alerting the driver with an alarm in order to let the driver know that danger is approaching. Additionally, the car will immediately brake and stop the driver from making the turn, but it also comes with an override feature if the driver knows they are not in danger.

According to Automobile Blog, the system has only been installed in the BMW 5 Series thus far and there is no news about future plans for the alert.
